Schlafly Bottleworks
About
Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood is the second brewpub of Schlafly Beer, the independent, locally owned brewery that pioneered craft beer in St. Louis. It opened in 2003 on April 7, exactly 70 years after Prohibition’s repeal, inside a former Shop ‘n Save grocery that had sat vacant for eight years. The renovation was part of an expansion that came as demand for Schlafly grew, adding brewing capacity and packaged beer. Schlafly traces its start to co-founder Tom Schlafly, an attorney who caught the real-ale bug while studying law at Oxford in 1983, and the company opened Missouri’s first licensed microbrewery in 1991. Today it brews more than 70 styles, both ales and lagers, including a Kölsch made with authentic yeast from Cologne that won gold at the World Beer Cup. The Bottleworks is one of several Schlafly brewpubs, alongside the original Tap Room in midtown and an airport location.
